Agriculture surveys and literature establish that sorghum was of the most important food crops in Mozambique. A large number of farmers have been shifting production gradually from sorghum to maize production despite its susceptibility to drought. The general objective of this study is to identify the factors responsible for decline of sorghum production in Mozambique. Comparative analysis between sorghum and maize are done. Enterprise budgets and break even analysis for both sorghum and maize are presented and discussed. Supply functions for sorghum and maize from 1950 to 1985 are estimated. It is concluded that the major factors responsible for sorghum production decline are the lack of security in the country side, drought during the last ten... |

The genus Alectryon occurs with some 30 species in E. Malesia, Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, the New Hebrides, the Solomon Islands, Fiji, Samoa, and the Sandwich Islands. Radlkofer (in Engl., Pflanzenr. 98, 1933: 983-1002) divided the genus into six sections. As a whole these sections are mostly well recognisable, but a clear demarcation between at least some of them appears impossible. Preference is given here to a division into three or four subgenera, which seems more justified. As Mr. George K. Linney, Honolulu, is working on the Pacific representatives of this genus and as Ms. S.T. Reynolds, Brisbane, recently completed a revision of the Australian species, I restricted myself in the present paper to the Malesian taxa. |

A taxonomic revision of the genus Ardisia Sw. in New Guinea, the Moluccas and the Aru Is. (but excluding the Bismarck Archipelago and the Solomon Is.), comprising 7 subgenera with a total of 31 species, of which 3 species are new to science. A key to the subgenera and keys to the species, full descriptions of all species, and an enumeration of the collections studied are given. |

It has been established that the absence of risk markets justifies market intervention in principle. The form of intervention that has been discussed most widely in the literature is the buffer stock. This paper points out that other forms of intervention, specifically buffer funds, are likely to perform better. The analysis shows that buffer funds are likely to outperform buffer stocks because they address market failure more directly. A sub-theme developed in this paper is that since buffer funds are enforced saving, it follows that policies that address capital market failure are likely to dominate buffer funds and buffer stocks in welfare terms. |
